An “improvement” project around Oakland’s Lake Merritt all too typically included plans to remove dozens of healthy adult trees—including this healthy, beautiful, large eucalyptus, a species common (and controversial) in the SF Bay Area.

A group of concerned citizens spearheaded a movement supporting development but challenging the unnecessary removal of mature and hundred-year-old trees that many neighbors loved: care for them properly, don’t destroy them, was their plea.

This day and photograph brought some of this community together to bring media attention to the many issues involved—and the lives of trees that hung in the balance.
