“Last Stand” – celebrates the then-threatened Memorial Oak Grove in Berkeley, CA. On Saturday, March 17th, 2007, more than 75 tree lovers bravely, peacefully bared themselves in a show of vulnerable solidarity within this last remaining grove of coast live oak trees on the flatlands of Berkeley.
Tree sitters—some visible here dangling in the branches above the crowd—inhabited the oaks for over 2 years to challenge the sanity of building a new gym over an active (Hayward) earthquake fault, and cutting down one of the last grove of mature live oaks in the city.
News media from around the world learned of their heartfelt efforts and the community which supported their peaceful vigil. Although they lost in court and eventually the trees were killed, people around the world saw how much we can care for trees. This is what will save the next grove of trees from such environmentally unconscious development, perhaps in YOUR backyard.
