In The Land of The Ancients 1
Dozens of courageous forest fans showed their devotion to towering Strawberry Rock and the surrounding Trinidad Forest in Trinidad, CA in Humboldt County, pictured here, on April 27, 2013.

A community effort is underway to preserve and restore this second-growth redwood forest.  All its old-growth has long since been logged, but its current land steward, Green Diamond timber company, wants to make additional clearcuts.

Hardy forest defenders hiked several miles in and up to make these images.  With true grit, they held their ground while a cold wind, driven by advancing fog, blew in from the ocean, and Jack circled the scene in a helicopter.  Their goal: raise awareness of this forest in jeopardy, and the importance of preserving woodlands which provide incalculable ecological benefit, including oxygen production, carbon sequestration, wildlife habitat, shading and cooling the earth, filtering ground water, and more.

This is one of a series of four images — “In The Land of the Ancients” 1, 2, 3 & 4 — made from the air, while circling Strawberry Rock.  See all 4 photographs, and more, on the Strawberry Rock event page.
